Convalescent Care

Who is it for?

Convalescent care at Ridgegate Home is designed for elderly individuals recovering from illness, surgery, injury or a hospital stay who need additional support and time to regain their strength before returning home.

This may include recovery from hip or knee replacements, cardiac events, strokes, falls, infections, or other medical conditions. Some individuals simply need time to build up their strength and confidence after a prolonged hospital stay before managing independently at home again.

Our smaller community of up to 23 residents ensures a calm, supportive atmosphere where you can focus on your recovery without the pressures of managing a household. Our care team works with you to support your rehabilitation goals and rebuild your independence.

Convalescent Care

Our Approach

Our care teams work closely with healthcare professionals to provide person-centred convalescent care that supports your recovery goals. We focus on building strength, confidence and independence through a combination of professional care, good nutrition, and encouragement.

Each convalescent guest receives a personalised care plan developed in consultation with them, their family, and healthcare professionals. This plan addresses physical recovery needs, mobility goals, medication management, and any ongoing health monitoring required.

We provide support with physiotherapy exercises as prescribed, assistance with daily activities as needed, and encouragement to gradually increase independence. Our kitchen team prepares nutritious, home-cooked meals to support healing and recovery, with menus tailored to any dietary requirements.

Our beautiful period property offers a peaceful environment for recuperation, with comfortable rooms (most with en-suite facilities), accessible communal areas, attractive gardens for gentle exercise, and an internal lift for those with mobility challenges.

Families are welcome to visit at any time, and we maintain regular communication to update you on progress. Most convalescent stays last a few weeks, though the duration is flexible depending on individual recovery needs.

TESTIMONIALS

What people say about us...

My dad has lived at Ridgegate Home for just over a year now and I couldn't be happier with the level of care he receives. Ridgegate is a friendly family home and is a lovely place to visit at any time of the day. My dad suffers with both physical and mental health issues and I am grateful to the attentive staff who make sure he is included in the many home activities.
I have no hesitation in recommending Ridgegate to others.

Daughter of Resident

November 2025

Respite care for mum went well and provided opportunity for a much needed break. All staff were helpful and courteous and mum was happy with her experience. She was able to get her hair done whilst there and made friends with many of the residents. Thanks for taking care of her!

Son of Resident

March 2025

My wife has been in Ridgegate for approximately for 2 years She initially arrived for respite care and then progressed to become a resident. She suffered from Lewy body dementia which affects her memory and physical movement. She is well looked after and seems to be very happy as much as you can tell. She interacts with the staff at all levels. I was well looked after and cared for by the dedicated and management team.

Husband of Resident

October 2024

My mother received respite care on a number of occasions at Ridgegate. She always had a happy stay and was well looked after. The home was chosen after my grandad had been looked after 2 years prior.

The important questions

What is convalescent care?

Convalescent care is short-term residential care following a period in hospital, designed to provide a supportive environment for recovery before returning home. It bridges the gap between hospital and home, offering time to regain strength, confidence and independence. Care includes assistance with daily activities, medication management, support with rehabilitation exercises, nutritious meals, and 24-hour professional support. The focus is on gradual recovery and building confidence to manage independently at home again. To learn more about the convalescent care we offer, get in touch with our team today on 01737 242926.

Who is convalescent care for?

Convalescent care is for individuals recovering from illness, surgery, injury or hospital stays who need additional time and support before returning home. This commonly includes recovery from orthopaedic surgery, cardiac events, strokes, falls, infections, or general weakness following prolonged hospitalisation.

When is convalescent care needed?

Convalescent care may be needed when hospital discharge is appropriate but returning straight home feels too soon, when additional rehabilitation time would be beneficial, when someone lives alone and needs support during recovery, or when family carers are unable to provide the level of care needed temporarily. Hospital staff, GPs, and social workers can help assess whether convalescent care is appropriate for your situation. Contact us on 01737 242926 to discuss your needs and arrange a visit.

What funding and support is available for convalescent care?

Funding options for convalescent care may include NHS Continuing Healthcare for those with ongoing health needs, local authority support for eligible individuals following hospital discharge, or private payment. Some individuals may qualify for intermediate care funding that covers short-term rehabilitation. We can provide guidance on funding options available and work with healthcare professionals to support funding applications. Contact us to arrange a consultation where we can discuss costs and funding in detail based on your individual circumstances.
